660. Paul G. Chandler Textbook Collection

 Record Group
Identifier: 660
Below is an excerpt from an area newspaper article ca. 1976 describing the contents and history of the Chandler Collection: The Chandler collection was "a gift of 218 volumes of historical textbooks from President Emeritus Paul G. Chandler." "The collection was formed between 1920 and 1930, prior to Dr. Chandler's tenure as president of CSC beginning in 1937. The majority of the texts are 19th century American, with the earliest imprint in 1681 and the latest in 1910. Appraisers Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine B. Stern, after appraising the collection at $5,271, said: 'Many of the books in the collection were influential in shaping the educational practices of this country. Among the high spots may be noted Pike's Arithmetic of 1788, a first among school books; Robertson's Phraseologia Generalis, of 1681, numerous tests by Noah Webster, among them the 1807 Philosophical and Practical Grammar. Grouped together, the 218 works form a fine reflection of early American pedagogy.' In commenting on the gift, Glenn L. Sitzman, associate professor and librarian at the college in charge of arranging the collections, said: 'Carlson Library and Clarion's academic community are indebted to Dr. and Mrs. Chandler for this fine gift, which will enhance Clarion's rich historical heritage. The special flavor of any college's library resources is determined by such generosity and thoughtfulness. This historical collection, representing over 200 years of textbook publishing, comes at an especially appropriate time as we celebrate our country's Bicentennial.' "
