  • Scope and Contents

    The creator of this scrapbook is unknown. It appears that perhaps the scrapbook was compiled by a Clarion Normal School office or official, such as an individual in the superintendent's / principal's / president's office. One indication of this possibility is that many of the included letters and memos are unsigned, indicating that they may have been drafts or unofficial copies.

    This scrapbook consists of Clarion State Normal School-related memorabilia from 1909-1913 inserted and pasted within the pages of a book titled, "Special Reports of the Census Office." Since this book is so similar to the one used in "Scrapbook, 1913-1918" in item 2 of this series, it is thought that this scrapbook was created by the same unknown individual or office.

    Pasted to page 19 - A memo discussing a new edition of the catalog for the Normal School. Of interest is a mention of the Campus Pageant that was held: "Perhaps the most attractive pictures are scenes from the Campus Pageant, that unusually attractive event of commencement week. The scene represented a Roman Holiday and in detail illustrated "A Gladiatorial Combat," "Children Before The Emperor," "Worshiping Vesta," etc."

The postcard reads," Dear Friend: School opens September 11, Students register on preceding day. I hope you are coming back to go on with your work. In order that we may make ample and satisfactory arrangements it will be helpful to us if you will indicate on the return postal whether or not you will return for the fall term. If you have already made up your mind or have difficulties in the way of determing the matter, be free to write us; we may be able to suggest ways of overcoming your difficulties. Have you selected your room mate or put in a request for your room? Attend to this matter soon. If you know of any persons to whom we may send catalogs or circulars kindly write names on card. A prompt reply will be much appreciated. The outlook is most encouraging. Very sincere'y yours, Harry M. Shafer, Principal."
