Notes

  • Scope and Contents

It appears that Aharrah helped to gather information for the publication of Farmerie's "Clarion State College: A Centennial History", and helped to coordinate a dispaly, and several individuals sent him historical information.

Among the materials in this folder is:

A copy of a letter to Ernest Aharrah from Mildred Gertrude McMahan Keefer, dated November 11, 1968. A quote from her letter: "When Seminary Hall was torn down, did they preserve the old bell that hung in the tower, which called the classes, meal time, going to bed, and getting up time, for decades, till it cracked? When my Grandfather, John Millikin Edwards, a Methodist minister, was the last president of the old Carrier Seminary, he had bought that bell and given it to the school."

A copy of a letter from Mildred S. Caldwell (office clerk in the alumni association) to Midred G. McMahan Keefer, dated November 19, 1968. A quote from the letter: "The gift of the bell in the tower by your Grandfather, Rev. John Millikin Edwards, the last President of Carrier Seminary, was a fine contribution to the School, and from that which you related to Mr. Farmerie for his "A Centennial History" it shows an even greater contribution to Carrier Seminary. It would seem that without Reverend and Mrs. Edward's money and their everyday work the Seminary would not have continued to be in existence. We have learned from Mr. Campbell that the bell of which you speak was taken down, perhaps fifteen years ago, and another was put in its place. The original one, given by your Grandfather was so badly cracked that upon being lowered it received a bump and fell apart into pieces."

A copy of a letter to Ernest Aharrah from M. B. Ozanne, dated July 14, 1967, in which she shares memories of Clarion Seminary. A quote from the letter: "When this opportunity came to go to the Methodist school in Clarion they sold their house in Wabash and with two children, my older brother and myself, went to Clarion Seminary where we lived in a room on the first floor. We ate in the dining room where the students ate. There were two capable women cooks. I remember groups of students in the hall. They liked to talk to the little girl who held a big doll and stood at an open door looking out at them as they passed. But I was very shy and drew back. Once there was an entertainment arranged and held on a platform on the second floor. I think I was to be a cupid. I was dressed in a gauzy white dress spangled with gold paper stars, and I carried a bow and arrow. But I spoiled the show for I walked backward to keep my eye on my mother. this is all I remember of this. In October 1880 by brother Roy was born. In July 1882 we were living in Riceville. So it may have been in 1881 that we left Clarion. I remember the Campus as a very big field with a fence around it and for a gate, a style. No steps, only a post and on top a loose block to turn. There was a horse loose in the lot to eat the grass. As my little brother Roy grew and was able to toddle out he was interested in the horse, and got too close for he was found with a hoof mark on his body, but was not injured; the horse had not stepped on him."

A page dated October 1967 with the heading, "Established that "No High School Work Allowed at Clarion" after 1926. Paper provides several proofs.

A card dated July 14, 1967 listing the names of the principals of Carrier Seminary and their terms of service. The information reads as follows:
