Notes

  • Scope and Contents

This image collection (except for folder # 145) was transferred to the archives in January of 2009 by Scott Kane from PAGES, who was referred to the archives by Ron Wilshire. This collection of black and white negatives with corresponding proof sheets was found in the PAGES work area, but are originally from University Relations. In some instances, the name of the photographer is available, but in most cases is not. The collection contains many photographs of individuals, which are not identified in the vast majority of cases. This collection, totaling 2 cubic feet, was processed, organized and described during the Fall 2009 semester. The suggested citation to the collection is: “University Relations Negative Collection, Clarion University Archives, Carlson Library, Clarion University of Pennsylvania.”

This collection arrived at the archives with an easily discernable organizational scheme. The black and white negatives with corresponding proof sheets arrived in sequentially numbered folders which included headings indicating the folder’s subject contents and, usually, the presumed date of the photographs. Some folders do not have a date listed, but the circa date can be determined by noting the dates of the folders before and after the one in question. The original, sequential order of the folders mirrors the chronological arrangement of the negatives. The contents of these folders were transferred to acid-free photo / negative envelopes, and the information that was written on the original folders was directly transcribed onto the acid-free envelopes. The headings used on the envelope to describe the contents most often indicate the subject of the photos, such as “Founders Entrance” or “R-TV Classroom.” In other cases, however, the heading seems to indicate the purpose for which the photos were originally shot, or used, such as “Economics Brochure,” or “Music Brochure.” When personal names are used as headings, it is often unclear as to whether or not it is referring to the name of the photographer, or the name of the subject of the photos. The negatives in this collection are on 35 millimeter film. The proof print of each image is quite small, at about 1.5 “ X 1 “. It appears that a proof print is not available for every negative in a small number of cases. These images range in date from October of 1987 through May of 1997.
