    The first page of the scrapbook indicates that it was compiled in Kane, PA in 1967. The annotations are in Ms. Sandford's own hand. Many of the photographs in the album are undated. Those that are dated span from 1935 to 1954.

    An introductory page in the scrapbook reads, "The story of art education at Clarion State Teachers College - Hazel Sandford. Introduction: Education in a teacher-training institution, presumably, is for the purpose of developing the whole child and the whole student. Art Education is one of the factors involved in this process. The following pictures and comments reveal how this was handled some years ago at C.S.T.C., 1927-1955." At the top of the page is a drawing of the spires of Seminary hall, labeled "designed by H. Sandford."

    Tucked into the back of the album is a type-written sheet with information about the life of Hazel Sandford. It reads as follows:

    "Miss Hazel Sandford was born in Sherman, N.Y. of Sept. 5th, 1894, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Sandford, and Jennie Gulick Sandford.

    Miss Sandford was a member of All Soul's Unitarian Church in New York City, but while in Clarion attended the Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Clarion chapters of the D.A.R. and the Eastern Star.

    The first sixteen years of her life were spent in New York City, where she attended grade school and the high-school department of Hunter College.

    She completed her secondary education at the Sherman high-school, where she took training-class work. For one year she taught the district-school at Hemstreet's Corners, Sherman, N. York.

    Subsequently, she attended Fredonia Normal School, where she was graduated in 1915. For three years she taught at Angola, N. York, as a first-grade teacher.

    Following this, she went to Cornell University and graduated in 1922 as a landscape architect. After a brief period on Long Island, in this profession, she decided to go back to teaching. She then started a career in art education and was in the New York area for three years.

    After this Miss Sandford became the art supervisor of the Elementary Schools of Mckeesport, Pa.

    Upon leaving McKeesport, she became Head of the Art Dept. at Clarion State Teachers College, where she remained until her retirement. She taught under Dr. Robert Steele, Dr. G.C.L. Riemer and Dr. Paul Chandler.

    Beyond her educational achievements already mentioned, Miss Sandford studied at New York University (M.A.), Columbia University, N.Y. School of Fine and Applied Art, University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Tech. and Thurn School of Modern Art. In 1928, she travelled and studied abroad with the Bureau of University Travel.

    During her 36 years of teaching, she instructed approximately 3000 students.

    When Miss Sandford, first came to Clarion, her classes were held in a single class-room in Founders Hall. After about 14 years there, she moved into beautiful new quarters in Davis Hall. Her art department there was reported to be the finest in Pennsylvania, aside from the special art schools.

    Miss Sandford came to Clarion in 1927 and retired in 1955, having spen 28 happy, active years in Clarion."
