This volume has a note attached, which reads, "Manuscript typed by Miss Sandford to preserve this book for the (then) Clarion State Teachers College Library."

The date that the transcription took place is unknown.

Included are notes, presumably from Hazel Sandford, to "please keep this valuable book in the library," and "preserve this precious book."

It appears that Hazel Sandford strongly wished this book to be retained at Clarion because of the author's (David Reeves Smiith) association with her father (Thomas Jefferson Sandford.) More about this association can be found in chapter two of Hazel Sandford's autobiography, "Lights and Shadows." (See the "Writings" sub-series.)

In one of her scrapbooks, Miss Sandford mentions books authored by her father, Thomas Jefferson Sandford. One of these books is titled, "The laborer’s catechism; or, The wide way to a true republic." This work has a copyright date of 1928. The Smith work contains the phrase, "the true republic" in the title, and has a copyright date of 1883. One might conjecture that perhaps the Smith work served as the inspiration for T. J. Sandford's later work.

Links to the digitized Smith work, freely available on the Internet, are included here. (These are digitized files of the published work; Not of Hazel Sandford's type-written transcription of the work.)
